Been using my new favorite toy a lot and I just couldnt deal with the noise the fan made so decided to sort that out.

This is the stock fan

After doing some searching of the stock fan, I came up with this info:

Noise Rating:33.5dB

The fan is 60x60x25mm, 12VDC and finding a silent replacement was a doddle.
I ended up ordering this little fella from QuietPC.com

The original is “hardwired” into a power connector so I had to do a little bit of splicing to wire it in but other than that there was no problems. The new one even came with rubber mounts so I didn’t have to fight on getting the lower bolts back in.

This is the end result and it runs at 15dB so nice and quiet.

Got myself a cheap Saturn with controller, leads and a couple of games so decided to try Sebs switchless mod.
I wont write another guide to this so ill just link to Sebs homepage, the code for the PIC is on the last page.

Note: The motherboard of my Saturn was different so all the JP’s were located in different places, front and back but they all still apply the same.
Sebs Switchless Saturn mod

This mod will also work if you have a modchip fitted and it also works with the hot swap method.

The hot swap is performed by opening the Saturn and placing some tape over the lid switch so it always thinks the lid is closed.
-Power the Saturn up with the backup disc in and wait until the drive access light stops flashing
-quickly remove the backup disc and insert an original, the drive access light with flash 3 times quickly when this happens remove the disc and replace it with the backup.

If you did that correctly the backup will boot and play normally.
When attempting this trick make sure you set the switchless mod to the same region as the backup disc otherwise the game will not boot.

Finally got around to starting the Dreamcast SD mod and its all over and done with in 15 minutes.
It involves soldering 7 wires to the back of the serial port and soldering them directly onto an SD socket. I used a cheap sd card reader as a donor.

SNES switchless modchip

I stumbled across a forum post a while back detailing a switchless mod for the SNES.
A forum member Ikari_01 has reverse engineered the CIC lockout chip and created his own and it is stunning.
I followed these diagrams and burned the latest .HEX from Ikari_01 to a PIC16F630.

The mod works very well so far, am waiting for a few more games to get here and a dual LED.

Ive got some different games coming and will update this post when I’ve finished testing.

UPDATE: I’ve finished testing this mod using 3 of the cheapest games that eBay had to offer, one from each region.
Ive also now hacked away a little at the casing of the SNES so US cartridges will fit in too. Its VERY rough but functional.

Installing a ROM higher than v1.3 in an Amiga 500

Guides, Mods  Comments Off on Installing a ROM higher than v1.3 in an Amiga 500
Dec 172010

I fixed up an Amiga 500 (not plus) today and wanted to install a newer ROM. I burned v2.04 and v3.1 onto 27C400 EPROMs and installed. I was greeted with a red crash screen which usually means there is a problem with the ROM code/chip.
On a Revision 5 motherboard (which is what Ive got) pin 1 of the ROM is not connected but pin 1 on a 27C400 is address line 17 and should connect to address line 18 of the 68k CPU, which is pin 31 of the ROM socket. Also the ROM needs to be set to WORD mode. The selector pin for this is pin 31 on the 27C400.
To make this all work we need to lift out pin 31 of the 27C400 and solder a link between this pin and pin 21, this gives us a permanent HIGH which sets it to WORD mode.
Finally, solder a jumper from pin 1 of the EPROM to pin 31 of the socket.
This should now boot up without problem
